More detail has been added. Apparently, I was subconsciously inspired by the ankylosaurus, one of my favorite dinosaurs!
As I sculpted, I thought of some biological information for these creatures. As babies, they are covered in leafy appendages that help them blend into the forest. As they grow larger, these appendages are replaced by tougher hide with lots of bumps, some of which will grow into overlapping plates and spikes. The older the animal gets, the more knobbly and spiky its hide becomes, reaching fullest development at around the age of 50.
